Hmm.  You must have the look of a college professor.  Actually, the Syd who worked at my college was not a professor--she was in charge of the dormitory where I lived one year.  Her husband, Bill Quarterman, attended classes.  Naturally, I was curious about the name, and it turns out he was of the Liberty County Quartermans, as were my ancestors, and we were, in fact, distantly related.

Was the American lady on your cruise mistaking you because of your name, or because of your appearance?  If it was the name, I'll bet she was thinking of the Syd at my college (Toccoa Falls College).  After all, Quarterman is a rare name over here.
