Page 9 James VI of Scotland and I of England

Meanwhile, Henry VII had also had a daughter by Catherine of Aragon, Margaret Tudor, who married King James IV of Scotland. whose son was James V, whose daughter was Mary Queen of Scots, whose son was James VI.

James VI was also descended from Margaret Tudor through his father. After James IV died, Margaret married Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, whose daughter Lady Margaret Douglass married Matthew Stuart, Earl of Lennox, whose son was Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who married Mary Queen of Scots and had James VI.

Since the direct royal Tudor line cased with Elizabeth I, and even though Elizabeth had had Mary Queen of Scots executed for trying to be Queen of England, Elizabeth thought Protestant James I of Scotland would be a better choice than Catholic Philip III of Spain, and all England agreed. Thus James VI of Scotland also became James I of England.
