Odysseus originally courted Helen, but decided Penelope was the better match. To resolve the multiple suits for Helen, he made all the suitors swear that they would defend her final choice, which turned out to be Menelaus. This was why Odysseus had to go to fight at Troy: Menelaus and Agamemnon invoked his own oath.
