Re: Quarterman Dates

On the American burning of York---today Toronto---undisciplined US troops burned not only govt. buildings but also private homes.  They also burned small towns returning to the US.

In retaliation Britain's well disciplined troops burned Wash DC but only the govt buildings.  They so surpised President Madison that they sat down in the White House and ate the dinner prepared for him before they stacked the furniture and burned the building.

Until then it had been called the President's Mansion.  So much white paint was later  used on the burned out shell that it came later to be called just "the White House."
