These two events are related, in a way. Darien was a border town,
established as a buffer between the British colonies to the north
and Spanish Florida to the south.

In between, the colony from Dorchester, S.C., settled in Midway
and Newport in 1752-54. Darien and Midway were always closely
allied, trading, fighting, and intermarrying together.

In 1762, Spain traded Florida to the British in exchange for Havana.

So it was from Florida that Col. Prevost led the British invasion of
Georgia in 1778 that destroyed the Midway colony and burned the church
on 27 Nov 1778. Rev. Allen was captured by the British and drowned on
8 Feb 1799 while escaping. Most of the survivors fled back to S.C.
Not that that did them much good, since the British burned Dorchester
S.C. two years later. This is known as the Dispersion of Midway Society.

Nonetheless, winning battles doesn't necessarily win the war, and the
British eventually departed. The Midway colonists returned in 1782,
building a new church for their new pastor Rev. Abiel Holmes in 1784,
and in 1792 constructing the church building that still stands today.
